Mountains & Streams, Secular and Pecuniary

Buckram, Thread, Pigment, Screen printing, Stitching

“Mountains & Streams, Secular and Pecuniary” is my interpretation of Chinese landscape ink painting “Mountain and Stream, Pure and Remote” by Xia Kui (active ca.1195-1230). This work addresses current Chinese economic-centered social zealousness in contrast to traditional Chinese cultural values and sprites exemplified in Xia Kui’s original painting, which embodies the universal longing of cultivated men to escape their quotidian world to commune with nature. The achromatic image is composed with Chinese currency Yuan signs, which were manually screen printed and superimposed with Chinese stock market index graphics in hand stitching.
